A focus timer for when attention wanders.

Topline is a Mac Pomodoro and a music bar for people who lose the session when the timer leaves the screen, or when changing the song means opening Spotify. The bar shifts from green to yellow to red as the session runs. The break ends by itself.

Topline is a timer and a music bar. It is not a treatment, a therapy, or a way to diagnose ADHD or anything else.

The three places a session usually dies

The clock is somewhere else

A Pomodoro inside a menu icon, or in an app on another Space, depends on you remembering to look. Topline puts the timer on a strip across the display and turns that whole strip red, with a glow, for the session. Red is a state, not a number you have to go find.

If a window covers the docked bar, Topline shrinks to a thin line so the window stays usable, and the countdown moves to the menu bar in red. Click it and the full bar comes back. When even that is too easy to ignore, right-click the bar and turn on Always Show Bar. The full red strip stays, even with a window underneath.

The song change opens another world

The risky moment is not the work. It is opening Spotify to skip, then a playlist, then a profile, and the document is gone. Topline keeps play, skip, scrub, and volume on the bar, for the Spotify app and for Apple Music. The song can change while the window you were in stays the window you are in.

There is no Topline account, and the Mac App Store version does not ask you to log in to Spotify. One less form between you and the session.

The break has no ending

A break you have to remember to close will not close. Topline's break is 5 minutes. A chime starts it, your music keeps playing, and a second chime marks the end. Then the bar is ready for another session. You do not set the break length. That is on purpose. The focus length is the one you choose: 5 to 90 minutes, in steps of 5, remembered. It starts at 25. Some days 25 is a story you tell yourself, and 15 is the honest number. Both are a drag or a scroll away.

When the words in the music are the problem

Lyrics compete with the sentence you were about to write. Undertone is sound with no words, built into the app. Click the waveform button next to the timer. Music has Deep (warm pads), Drift (mellow keys), Glow (a slow shimmer), and Rain (soft rain and a far-off piano). Places has Coffee Shop, Waterfall, Jungle, Ocean, Fireplace, and Storm. Pick one and it plays until you stop it. It pauses Spotify or Music while it plays.

The timer leaves sound alone. It does not start Undertone or a playlist, and the break does not pause anything. Details of the timer itself are on the Pomodoro page.

What it will not do

A small way to set it up

  1. Drag the bar to the top of the display you actually work on. It snaps there.
  2. If the full strip keeps collapsing under your windows, turn on Always Show Bar.
  3. Pick a length you have finished before, not the length you wish you could finish.
  4. Start Undertone, or a playlist you already trust, before you click the timer. The timer will not change it.
  5. Click the timer. The bar turns green and starts its slide to red. That is the whole start.

Questions

Is Topline an ADHD app?

It is a Pomodoro timer and a music bar that a lot of people with ADHD look for: the clock stays in sight, changing the song does not mean opening another app, and the break ends on its own. It is not a medical device, a treatment, or a diagnostic tool.

Will I lose the ADHD timer behind a window?

If a window covers the docked bar, Topline shrinks to a thin line so the window's buttons stay reachable, and the countdown moves to the menu bar in red. Click that and the full bar comes back. To keep the full red bar on screen, right-click it and turn on Always Show Bar.

What if lyrics pull me off the task?

Switch to Undertone. Click the waveform button next to the timer and pick a sound with no words: Deep, Drift, Glow, or Rain, or a place like Coffee Shop, Waterfall, Jungle, Ocean, Fireplace, or Storm. It plays until you stop it. The focus timer does not start or stop it.

Does Topline block websites or other apps?

No. It does not block sites, hide other apps, or lock you into a mode. It shows the timer and the music, and it steps aside when a window needs the top of the screen, unless you turn on Always Show Bar.

How long should an ADHD Pomodoro be in Topline?

The timer runs from 5 to 90 minutes, in steps of 5, and it remembers your length. It starts at 25. A shorter session still counts, as long as it runs at least a minute. The break is always 5 minutes, and it ends by itself.
