Topline is the thin bar on your Mac for Spotify and Apple Music, with a Pomodoro timer on the left. Something not working, or an idea? Email ash@yakshaving.net and you'll hear back from a human.

The bar says "Open Spotify or Apple Music"

Topline follows the Spotify or Music app on your Mac. Open one and play something. The bar picks it up within a second.

Play, skip, or volume don't do anything

Topline needs permission to control your music app. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation, find Topline, and turn on Spotify, Music, or both.

I lost the bar

Press ⌃ ⌥ ⌘ S to show or hide it, or open Topline again from Applications. Right-click the bar and choose Reset Position to put it back at the top of your main screen.

The bar turned into a thin line

That is the docked bar getting out of a window's way, so the window's buttons stay reachable. The song, and the timer if one is running, move to the menu bar. Click that menu bar item and the full bar comes back. Right-click the bar and turn on Always Show Bar if you want the full strip to stay up.

Moving the bar

Drag any empty part of the bar. Drop it near the top of a display and it snaps there full width. Drop it anywhere else and it floats, with rounded corners. The spot is remembered.

Focus timer

Click the timer on the left to start, pause, or resume. Drag it sideways or scroll over it to change the length, from 5 to 90 minutes, in steps of 5. The bar shifts from green to yellow to red as the session runs. When focus ends you get a chime and a 5-minute break. Whatever is playing keeps playing. The timer only keeps time. The full walkthrough is on the Pomodoro page.

Focus stats

Right-click the bar and choose Focus Stats. You get today's minutes, finished sessions, a streak, your best hour, and the week.

Undertone

Click the waveform button next to the timer. A picker of glowing orbs opens in two groups: Music (Deep, Drift, Glow, Rain) and Places (Coffee Shop, Waterfall, Jungle, Ocean, Fireplace, Storm). Pick one and it plays, and Spotify or Music pauses. The bar takes the sound's colors. It loops until you stop it or press play in Spotify or Music. The focus timer never starts or stops it. You can try some of the sounds on the homepage. What the research shows, and what it does not, is on the focus soundscapes page.

Key sounds

Right-click the bar, choose Settings, and turn on Show key sounds on the bar. A keyboard button appears at the right end. Click it to play a mechanical klack for every key. The first time, allow Topline under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring. The chevron next to the button sets the volume and the switch style. Topline only notes the kind of key, to pick a sound. It does not save or send what you type. The walkthrough, and a way to hear the styles, is on the keyboard page.

Quitting

Right-click the bar and choose Quit Topline.
